3 Cleanup Ideas for Autumn

Did you purchase a new grill for the summer and still have the old one sitting around in your yard? Is this the last summer your kids will be using the swing set they grew up with? Are you taking on a construction project where you’re likely to have lots of materials to toss? Or do you want to get your packed garage in order before you’ll need to park your cars indoors for the winter?

Everyone’s heard of spring cleaning, but fall can actually be a great time to get rid of unwanted junk and debris around your home. Read on for some different ideas and options for removing unwanted junk from your property this fall.

1. Rent a roll-off dumpster

If you have quite a bit of stuff you want to get rid of, renting a roll-off dumpster can be a great option. This is often easier than hauling away larger items one by one, and is especially useful if you’re doing any kind of construction project that will generate a lot of debris. The price of renting a dumpster depends on a number of factors including the size, the length of the rental, and the availability for the dates you’re looking at. Generally speaking, a 10 to 20-yard dumpster can be rented for around $400 for one week.

2. Hire a professional to clean up and remove unwanted junk and debris

A great alternative to renting a dumpster is hiring a professional not only to bring the dumpster, but to take care of the cleanup work for you. This is an especially popular option if you have a lot of stuff to get rid of and don’t want to take the time to figure out where to take it all. Depending on the junk you have, some of it may be recyclable. Other items might be in good enough condition to donate to a local charity. Still others (such as car batteries) may require specialized disposal. Instead of dealing with the headache of sorting and doing away with everything yourself, hire a specialist who will know where and how to dispose of each item and will take it off your hands in a flash.

3. Do it all yourself

And then, there’s always the options to do this work yourself. In general, taking on the task of large scale cleanup on your own makes most sense for small jobs, individual items, or when you have only one type of material to dispose of. Look online to find where to take the goods that you want to get rid of. Also, for items that others might be able to use (whether it’s empty boxes or a beat up couch), consider listing them on websites like Craigslist so others can come take them off your hands for you. Who knows — you might even be able to make a few bucks.
