Beachwood dates back to a plan in 1914 backed by New-York Tribune publishers, under which 1,763 acres of Berkeley Township was purchased and then sectioned off as a summer colony they called “Beachwood”. Buyers paid $19.60 for their plot of land which measured 20 feet x 100 feet and also received a 6-month subscription to The Tribune newspaper as a bonus. The first cottages were constructed during the first summer season, and then the first residents moved into the area in the April of 1915.
