10 Ways to Prevent Illegal Dumping in Your Dumpster Rental

It never fails, we get dozens upon dozens of calls every month with people complaining of illegal dumping in their roll off dumpster. There is nothing more frustrating than renting a dumpster to get rid of your trash only to realize you are the neighborhood dump.

id-logoweb_glow Not only can it be time consuming working around materials thrown into a dumpster, it can be costly. If you don’t have enough dumpster space to complete your job, you may wind up renting another dumpster just to finish. These marauders tend to appear and disappear without ever being seen, the only evidence they were even there being the trash they left behind.

I can’t tell you how sorry I feel for the people who call me to order a second dumpster to accommodate someone using their dumpster without permission. But you don’t have to just sit back and hope you are not a victim of the “Container Thief”. There are steps you can take to minimize your exposure to risk and theft. Here is a list of suggestions you can follow to deter illegal dumpers.

· Keep the dumpster in a secure area if possible. If you have a fence or gate, put the dumpster inside the perimeter.

· Keep the dumpster away from busy streets if avoidable.

· Keep the dumpster in a well-lit area. Criminals like the dark, so take it away from them.

· Cover your dumpster when not in use. Buy a plastic tarp and some bungees at a hardware store and use them every day.

· Let neighbors know you have a container and ask them to be watchful of the area while you are not there.

· Schedule your dumpster for a time when you know you will be able to load it quickly.

· Load your dumpster as soon as it arrives. Leave less space for illegal dumping.

· Schedule your pick up day in advance. Be mindful that it may take several days for the company to remove the container.

· Check your dumpster every day for illegally dumped debris. If you are a victim, search the garbage for identifying tags, labels or correspondence. If the problem is serious enough, you may want to call local law enforcement.

· Do not rent a dumpster if you will be away from the property for long periods of time. Instead, plan your rental when you can fill it quickly and reduce your exposure time to risk.

· Keep a look out for suspicious activity. Stay alert and stay aware.

So, with a little planning and awareness, your dumpster rental can be a simple, pain free and helpful process. I hope this helps you plan your rental.

Be safe, be well and most of all BE HAPPY!
